In a press release, Dark Horse Comics have commemorated the publication of a hardcover edition of writer/chef Anthony Bourdain’s final comic book series, “Hungry Ghosts.”

“Hungry Ghosts,” co-written by Bourdain and Joel Rose, is a series of stories inspired by the popular Japanese Edo period game, Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai. The book substitutes chefs in place of the traditional samurai and adapts the stories of yokai, yorei, and obake by making food central to each tale. The stories are illustrated by artists Sebastian Cabrol, Vanesa Del Rey, Francesco Francavilla, Irene Koh, Leonardo Manco, Alberto Ponticelli, Paul Pope, and Mateus Santolouco, and colored by Jose Villarrubia.
The hardcover graphic novel includes five all-new recipes from Bourdain, a dedication to the late chef by Rose, and a guide to the legendary spirits that inspired the stories, written by Rose and illustrated by Leonardo Manco (“Hellblazer”) entitled The Real Ghosts.
The book was published under Dark Horse’s Berger Books imprint, marking a reunion for Bourdain and Rose with comic editor Karen Berger, who was the founding editor of Vertigo Comics – the publisher of Bourdain and Rose’s first two graphic novels, “Get Jiro!” (penciled by Langdon Foss) and “Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi” (illustrated by Alé Garza).
“Hungry Ghosts” is on sale now at local comic shops, and will arrive in bookstores everywhere October 12, 2018.
