Oh, and speaking of Hellboy, we’ve got more news for the Mignolaverse for you.
As revealed in a CBR exclusive interview, it has been confirmed that Mignola and Arcudi will be once again returning to the past for a third installment of their 1940’s series. Following ‘1946’ and ‘1947’ (surprise), the new installment will take place in ‘1948’ with Max Fiumara, who you may remember from the recent ‘Transformation of JH O’Donnell’ one-shot. As explained by Arcudi, the story revolves around the non-fictional Project Orion, which was the US governments first foray into nuclear propulsion in the wake of the atom bomb, and finds the 40’s BPRD team led by Professor Bruttenholm going to Utah to investigate some strange occurrences.
As Arcudi explains,
Professor Bruttenholm and a B.P.R.D. crew (fronted by Stegner and Anders) come to Utah to investigate a strange series of sightings of some horrifying monsters. There, the Professor meets Anna Rieu, a brilliant and beautiful physicist. Seems like a match made in heaven, and sparks do fly — but all kinds of sparks! Meanwhile, Anders proves to be a smoldering problem that comes to head at maybe the worst possible time.
Unlike the past two 40’s installments, ‘1948’ will be written by Arcudi with Mignola (as opposed to Joshua Dysart, who wrote the first two), with the spotlight now being put on Bruttenholm as a character more so than the past installments did. The ostensible reason for Arcudi taking over is that the series will now feature a stronger connection to the current timeline for the BPRD, including more direct references and, if we can call this a prequel, “foreshadowing.”
And yes, young Hellboy will be around some more. Pancakes are a possibility as well.
