Brian Wood Month is here!

Vertigo Comics has made February of 2010 the unofficial Brian Wood month, and with good reason – Brian Wood is one of the best writers in the business.

This month we’re seeing the release of the first issue of the new volume of Demo, his collaborative standalone effort with Becky Cloonan, the 50th issue of DMZ, and the 25th issue of Northlanders. All three are huge deals, as each of them represent some of the best in comics and landmark issues to boot.

While DMZ may have an electric list of artists (Jim Lee, Dave Gibbons, and Fabio Moon to name a few) supporting the issue and Northlanders may be continuing the intensely awesome “The Plague Widow” arc, it’s really Wood and Cloonan’s return to Demo that should be top of your list.

I’ve been imploring Multiversity’s other writers all weekend: if you can pick up one title this week, it has to be Demo. The first volume featured some of the best work in comics over the past decade. One of the major highlights of the series was Cloonan’s phenomenal art, whose chamelonic style shifts matched Wood’s tales of young people (with powers!) perfectly. It was sort of like Local with mutant powers, except there was not a central character tying every story together. You have no excuse to not pick this issue up as the entire series are standalone sonnets about these gifted but haunted characters.

Don’t miss out on what will assuredly be a stellar comic. Check after the jump for a sample piece of art from the first issue, and don’t miss Vertigo’s Graphic Content blog for links to other great Brian Wood resources.
