This article has been updated to reflect, per Brubaker’s newsletter, that while three books have been announced, they are not intended to form the entirety of the series.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips have announced “Reckless,” the first of a new series of graphic novels set to be published by Image Comics.

The series will follow a private investigator, Ethan Reckless, who will take care of a problem provided the price is right. In “Reckless,” Ethan’s latest case will see a face from his student days asking for help.

In a statement, Brubaker said the the series comes from “my love of pulp heroes and private eyes,” continuing, “When I’m craving escapism, I pick up a Jack Reacher book… or a Lew Archer, or a Claire DeWitt, or a Travis McGee, or an Easy Rawlings, or a Parker…” Brubaker also detailed how the series will differ from his previous collaborations with Phillips, such as “Criminal” and “Pulp,” because “we’ve almost never focused on a hero. So ‘Reckless’ is a big left turn for us, but it’s still our version of a ‘hero’ — so sometimes more of an anti-hero, probably.”

“Reckless,” which will be 144-pages long, is set for release in both digital and print editions on December 16, with a bookstore release on December 22. A second graphic novel is scheduled for April 2021, with a third on the way. You can check out the preview pages over at THR.
