When last we heard about O’Malley’s new graphic novel “Seconds,” his follow-up to the critically acclaimed “Scott Pilgrim” series, we didn’t know too much. Truth be told, O’Malley said he would be keeping mum on it for quite sometime, hoping that readers familiar with his work would trust him well enough to allow a bit of mystery and surprise.
Well, if you’d like to keep that innocence, then look away now. In an interview with Random House Canada (as spied by Robot 6), O’Malley has finally opened up about his new book:
Seconds is about a restaurant, and the restaurant is called Seconds, and 90 percent of the story takes place within it. Beyond that it’s really hard for me to explain and I’m going to have to work on that so I can talk about it properly when it comes out. But it’s funny and weird and kind of big and crazy despite the mundane setting.
O’Malley adds that “Seconds” is grounded in the reality of the restaurant, although the restaurant takes place in a “kinder, gentler fairy tale version of reality.” Describing the overall story as “strange” and “mental,” he names the protagonist as Katie and adds that the book will have it’s own feeling rather than rely on the style he developed with “Scott Pilgrim.”
Look for the book next year from Random House’s Villard Imprint.
