MacMillan imprint First Second is bringing Maximum Fun’s “nightmare version of the gig economy” to comics in 2021. “Bubble,” an original graphic novel based on the scripted comedy-horror podcast of the same name, follows freelance monster hunter Morgan from the “bubble” of Fairhaven, a domed city amidst the monstrosity-filled Brush that composes the outside world. She does this with the help of her trusty Huntr smartphone app.

Series creator Jordan Morris and podcast writer Sarah Morgan will handle scripting duties for the book. Tony Cliff, best known for his work on “Deliah Dirk” and the “Flight” anthology, will provide art. “Space Battle Lunchtime” and “Snarlbear” illustrator Natalie Riess is on board as colorist. “I’m a lifelong comics fan so it was a literal dream come true to make this book,” Morris told GamesRadar+. “I always felt like the podcast was like comic books for your ears so naturally it’s been such a blast adapting it for this medium that I love so much. Seriously, I can’t believe this is happening. I feel like I won a contest or something.”

Bubble first premiered on the Maximum Fun podcast network on June 12, 2018. It was the first scripted and serialized series produced by the network, and featured voice talents ranging from Archer’s Judy Greer, Daily Show alum John Hodgman, and Thrilling Adventure Hour regular Paul F. Thompkins. The first season ran for eight episodes, with the last airing on July 31, 2018. In addition to the OGN adaptation, an animated feature is in the works from Sony Pictures Animation, produced by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg. Morris will handle scripting duties for the film.

“Bubble” hits shelves on July 13, 2021.
