If you’re interested in making the Internet angry, start a rumor about “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” being restarted without Joss Whedon. If you want to make it violently angry, actually do so.

That’s what Warner Bros. did today, as they announced they are going to go-ahead and reboot the franchise with no ties to the original Kristy Swanson starring flick or the beloved TV series Whedon created and Sarah Michelle Gellar starred in. The production team includes newcomer Whit Anderson and Dark Knight producer Charles Roven, but no Whedon to be seen.

If you want something with a cult following to be a success with that audience, you have to give them what they want. Warner Bros.? They did the exact opposite. Fear the wrath of “Buffy” fans Warner Bros., as currently both “Joss” and “Whedon” are trending on Twitter (curiously enough, “Joss Whedon” is not) due to fan vitriol. We’ll see how this goes for them, or how this affects the current comics. See the reaction of Whedon here.

The new “Buffy” is set to launch in late 2011 or 2012.
