Announced yesterday at the Cup O’ Joe Panel, it looks like Brian Bendis and Mike Oeming’s seminal “Powers” book is relaunching in July as “Powers: FBI”, a 40 page book for $3.95 focusing on Deena Pilgrim’s new career.
At the end of the second volume of “Powers,” Deena Pilgrim left, returning recently as a member of the FBI to help Detectives Walker and Sunrise solve the mystery of the God killers. The new book will star Deena in her role as an FBI agent, but with preview art featuring Walker as well it would appear that a career change is coming for him as well. This will be Bendis and Oeming’s second creator-owned ongoing at Icon, as they are also putting out the new “Takio” ongoing.
It’s an interesting move, considering that “Powers” is a creator-owned book now following company-owned book tactics. Rather than continue with the inconsistently released third volume of “Powers”, the book is relaunching with a new #1 and is being billed as a jumping on point for new readers curious about the book. If “Powers” has suffered for anything, its the delays in issues caused by the creative team getting wrapped up in work on the currently-in-limbo TV show production. A relaunch could help get the book back on track and hopefully attract new readers to the series, as it is one of Bendis’ best books and an absolute Multiversity favorite.
One can only hope that the book retains some form of consistent schedule with Bendis and Oeming working on two books together, not to mention Oeming’s two Dark Horse works and his possibly-never-coming-out Warren Ellis collaboration.
