For those that go to Emerald City ComiCon, Monsters & Dames is something you’re likely familiar with. If you do not, this art book is sold only at ECCC in Seattle with all proceeds going to charity for a local children’s hospital. The works are developed by artists that attend the Con, fitting into the theme of monsters and the dames they interact with (naturally).
It always features work by some of the best and brightest in the industry (last year’s edition featured Mike Allred, Tim Sale, Jeff Lemire, and a ton of others – including my personal favorite, Natalie Nourigat), and it’s exciting to look through this book and see all of the different concepts these artists come up with. Some of the pieces tell a story, some are singular images, some art…completely bizarre. But they are all exciting pieces of original art.
As we get closer and closer to the Con, many artists start revealing their pieces on their blogs, DeviantArt pages, and more, and the first one I’ve seen so far was Cameron Stewart’s piece that he posted on his blog today. For a first timer, Stewart completely nailed it, depicting a cute, green haired girl and the her pet monster who loves her. As Stewart said, it’s a bit cutesy for his normal work, but it works incredibly well.
For those that are planning on attending the increasingly awesome Emerald City ComiCon 2011, make sure to stop by the official ECCC booth first so you can get your own copy. It’s highly recommended by yours truly, especially considering it looks like this year’s book will include incredible artists like Geoff Darrow, JG Jones, Frank Cho, Skottie Young, and a whole lot more.
