Marvel Comics have announced that they will launch two new ongoing Captain America series: “Captain America: Symbol of Truth,” once again headlined by Sam Wilson, and “Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty,” starring Steve Rogers. Writer Tochi Onyebuchi (“Black Panther Legends”) will launch “Symbol of Truth” with artist R.B. Silva (“Powers of X”) in May, while Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (“Kang the Conqueror”) will begin “Sentinel of Liberty” with Carmen Carnero (“Captain Marvel”) in June.

According to an interview with the writers at Entertainment Weekly, Sam will become the Captain America the public sees as holding that title, while Steve will be operating covertly, and spending more time in civilian clothes. (He will also retain his classic shield design.) Both series will be preceded by an issue #0 in April, written by Onyebuchi, Lanzing, and Kelly, with art by Mattia De Iulis, which will see Steve and Sam having a conversation “about what it means for both of them to be Captain America simultaneously,” albeit while battling Arnim Zola, instead of “over beers.”

“Symbol of Truth” will then see Sam and Joaquín Torres (the second Falcon) embark on a globe-trotting spy adventure that confronts “America’s shady foreign policy.” Onyebuchi said the book will be about what it means for the world to see America be represented by a Black man, and especially what that says with regard to “the way in which America interacts with the rest of the world.”

Lanzing said “Sentinel of Liberty” will see Steve “really looking at what it means to be Steve Rogers,” and confronting “a threat that truly needs his version of Captain America.” He added, “What does Captain America mean to Steve beyond being the leader of the Avengers and answering to the government? Since he feels he’s handed that off. So what is Steve building? What is he organizing? What do his friends need from him specifically? What does Bucky need from him?”
