Captain America: The Fighting Avenger Now a One-Shot

While this was indicated in Marvel’s April 2011 solicitations, we now have explicit confirmation that Marvel’s previously announced All Ages Captain America series, written by Multiversity favorite Brian Clevinger and Illustrated by Gurihiru, has now been downgraded all the way down PAST limited series to a One-Shot. For my money, this is one of the steepest downgrades I’ve seen for a book, pre-release, in quite some time.

Clevinger had this to say about the downgrade…

“You may recall that this was intended to be an on-going series. It was downgraded to a four issue mini-series and then two issues – you get both of ‘em in this one-shot. Captain America: The Fighting Avenger will be one of the last “all ages” issues of anything Marvel will produce for quite a while. Because they “aren’t profitable.”

What I mourn here is the largest comics publisher in America giving up on fun and accessible comics.”

The connection to another recently mourned all ages book (Thor: The Mighty Avenger) should be apparent to many readers of this site, although one could argue that this book’s fate was much, much more severe.

You can check out Captain America: The Fighting Avenger #1 (of 1) this April (and I’m gonna go ahead and recommend it now since, given the creative team, its an almost guaranteed win.)
