This morning at USA Today, Marvel revealed that they’ll be releasing the first X-Men original graphic novel since 1982, a little ditty spinning out of “Battle of the Atom” titled “X-Men: No More Humans”. The concept, simply put, is how the mutants deal with all of the human population – including the heroes – disappearing. Great concept, exciting announcement, but the best part? It’s written by Mike Carey.
For those that don’t know, Carey is a guy who wrote one of the best and most unheralded X-Men runs around, as his work on “X-Men” (which was eventually retitled “X-Men Legacy”) was faithful to continuity, showed brilliant handle on the characters, and was never not exciting and appealing. His run was some of the better X-Men work we’ve seen in recent memory, and to have him return with artist Salvador Larroca on an OGN? That’s pretty freaking fantastic. But you don’t have to believe me.
I asked resident X-Fanatic Brandon Burpee for his take, and he said:
Mike Carey ruled the mutant roost when he was left to his own devices on X-Men Legacy. With him returning to the mutants in the pages of an OGN, things just went next level. It’s a self contained mainline of Carey X-Men. How could that be anything but awesome? To top it off he’s touching on elements from Battle of the Atom. Maybe be can clean some of that mess up.
Classic.
This will be a 128-page OGN, and it will be arriving November 7 for assuredly a billion dollars. Or $24.99 or something like all of their other OGN’s. Either way, Carey on X-Men? We’re in.
