Next year, Marvel Comics’ “Guardians of the Galaxy” will be relaunched by writer Donny Cates and artist Geoff Shaw, reuniting after their work together on “Thanos.”

In an announcement included in advance press copies of this week’s “Thanos Legacy” #1, the new series promises to reveal “#WhoAreTheGuardians.” Along with the statement, a double page spread was included that showcased a host of characters, including the most recent Guardians line-up, Cosmo, Galactus, Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock and many more from the Cosmic corner of Marvel Comics.
The Guardians of the Galaxy were created by Stan Lee, Arnold Drake and Roy Thomas, and debuted in 1969’s “Marvel Super-Heroes” #18, in a story illustrated by Gene Colan. Since then, the team’s lineup has changed multiple times, most notably with the 2008 relaunch by writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (and artist Paul Pelletier), that brought together Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Quasar, Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer and Groot. It was this team that was that basis of the 2014 film.
The most recent iteration of the team and the title was written by Gerry Duggan, and penciled by Aaron Kuder, which ended earlier this year with #150. Duggan and Kuder’s run continued in the event miniseries “Infinity Countdown” and “Infinity Wars,” which wraps up this December. The “Thanos Legacy” one-shot, written by Cates and Duggan, with art by Brian Level and Cory Smith, bridges the gap between “Thanos” and “Infinity Wars,” while setting up the “Guardians” relaunch.
“Thanos Legacy” #1 is due for release September 5. The new “Guardians of the Galaxy” #1 is set to be released in January, which will also mark the 50th anniversary of the superhero team.
