Announced via Entertainment Weekly today in advance of C2E2, it looks like everyone who said that Wolverine was going to die was right — because Wolverine is going to die.

Written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Steve McNiven, “the Death of Wolverine” is a four-issue mini-series that will run every week in September, starting on the 3rd and ending on the 24th. The series will be full of references to the past, with nods to his first appearance, the Claremont/Miller Japan story, Barry Windsor-Smith’s “Weapon X,” Millar’s “Enemy of the State” (yes, really, apparently) and even “Old Man Logan.”

What is of course interesting about the event is that it’s written by Charles Soule and not Paul Cornell, the man writing the main Wolverine series (and all of the ‘3 Months to Die’ issues leading up to this series. Looking at the description, though, it makes sense as to why: because it’s actually just a retrospective of Wolverine’s life, as he is apparently told not to fight anymore or he will die. So Cornell and Stegman will do the actual killing of Wolverine, but then Soule and McNiven will drag out his demise for four issues because who likes a nice, quick, clean death? Not Logan, that’s for sure!

The series launches September 3rd, with ‘3 Months to Die’ launching this summer.

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
