The title of this article is somewhat of a joke. You see, what you see here is the design for War Machine in the upcoming book Iron Man 2.0, written by Nick Spencer with art by Barry Kitson. The reason it is kind of a joke is that … well, War Machine is basically Iron Man 2.0 in a sense, isn’t he? Granted, Iron Man has gone through lots of suits himself, but the War Machine suit was always designed to go with the Iron Man suit as an improved model. It’s a humorous thing to think about.
Either or, here we have the first visible redesign by Barry Kitson for the new War Machine suit. It’s a lot less bulky than it used to be, and it’s look a tad closer to the sleek style of the Iron Man Extremis 2.0 suit which, thematically, makes sense. The suit is also a lot more futuristic than it has ever been, which is really pretty cool. As Spencer said about the redesign, “I’ve never had a hand in a [redesign] like this for one thing–though to be fair, [Barry] did most of the heavy lifting. It’s exciting to think about how we might be making a lasting change to the character here, introducing a new armor that could last for years. I was even excited for the character; Tony changes armors on a somewhat semi-regular basis, [but] Rhodey far less often. So it was cool to see him finally get a serious upgrade.”
Iron Man 2.0 launches next month, and with the hot streak Spencer is on, I can guarantee you you’re going to want to pick this up. If Spencer alone didn’t convince you though, need I remind you that Barry “The Order” Kitson is on art duties? That certainly clinched the deal for me.
