As astonishing as that might seem, it’s the truth – a CGC-graded 10.0 copy of the first issue is up for sale on eBay, with it’s “buy it now” option at $12,999, which – according to series artist Rob Guillory – is quite a steal.
The book is quite the underdog champion, coming out with us having relatively heard nothing for it and it’s major press coming from printing in the back of an issue of the Walking Dead. However, the first arc sold like hotcakes, and the book has since seen it come into multiple printings right out the gate. Seeing the book at a $13,000 price point must have Layman and Guillory quite excited to say the least, and I can only imagine that this plus the Eisner and Harvey awards plus the TV show deal will get Layman and Guillory on a path that will put their kids through college to say the least. Or maybe I’m just over exaggerating that list bit – but it’s seriously a fantastic comic book.
The book itself is almost at issue #15, marking the first quarter of the story complete and the first oversized issue that comes with an extra large and snazzy cover. The first issue’s starting bid is at $3,500, and it’s being claimed as the only one of it’s kind. So – how much money do you have?
UPDATE: In response to this very post, Chew artist Rob Guillory has promised Multiversity that he will eat his hat if the book sells. So now this pretty much HAS to be bought so we can film that and put it online as an MC exclusive!
