Christie’s Auction House and Daniel Maghen Gallery Host Perhaps the Biggest Comic Art Exhibition/Auction Ever

Next month, Paris’ Daniel Maghen Gallery will be hosting an auction with the famous Christie’s Auction House, and it looks to be one of the most impressive auctions of original comic artwork to date.

Featuring 360 pieces from some of the biggest names in comics, the auction will feature the work of Jack Kirby, Osamu Tezuka, Will Eisner (including an entire 7-page Spirit story), Frank Frazetta, Mike Mignola, Jean Giraud/Moebius, Bernie Wrightson, Hergé, Hugo Pratt, Enki Bilal, Edgar P. Jacobs, Jordi Bernet, Milo Manara and many, many more. It is truly a comic book fan’s wildest dream come to life, and it is easily one of the most colossal assemblings of talent ever.

If you happen to be across the pond and not stateside like us, you have until the end of the month to see some of this amazing artwork, which will be on display in Paris, London and Brussels before the auction itself begins:

  • Until March 21st: South Kensington tour (Christie’s London)
  • Until March 25th: at the Daniel Maghen Gallery
  • March 25th and 26th: Brussels tour
  • March 25th to March 31st: Christie’s Paris Atrium
  • April 2nd to 5th: Complete exhibition at Christie’s Paris
  • April 5th, 02:30pm: Sale at Christie’s Paris

Going once, going twice… sold! Christie’s, the world renowed auction house, and Daniel Maghen Gallery, Europe’s premier sequential art gallery, have undertaken a historical partnership to present a original art auction of unprecidented scale. This prestigious event will be solidifying sequential art’s place in the global art market.

Over 200 original pieces from a world-wide selection of major comics and illustration artists will be available, including the cover art from Albert Uderzo’s Asterix and the Soothsayer as well as the one from Franquin’s Spirou and Fantasio – L’héritage. This finely curated selection includes historic artists (Franquin, Peyo, Jacobs, Will), classics (Pratt, Moebius, Tardi, Bilal, Gibrat), new talents (Mallié, Brüno, Vallée, Boiscommun) and illustrators (Lacombe, Graffet, Brizzi).

An initial selection will be on display at theDaniel Maghen Gallery from Wednesday, January 29th to Saturday, March 1st and at Christie’s during Le Salon du Dessin (26th to the 31st of March) and Wednesday, April 2nd to Saturday, April 5th. The catalogue (March 15th) will combine Christie’s and Maghen’s unique know-how in designing such prestigious volumes. Auction date: Saturday, April 5th.
