Claudio Sanchez is no stranger to comic books, and neither is the band Coheed and Cambria. They’ve previously released, both through their own imprint and Image, three different Coheed related comic books based around the story in the albums. With the new album, I guess Claudio has decided that he’s going to step it up and release a 352 page book instead!

Co-written with Muliversity favorite Peter David, the book Year of the Black Rainbow will be released with the CD of the same title next week. The only way to get the book, though, is to get the deluxe hardcover edition of the album, which will run you $40. The package comes with the CD (with two unreleased bonus demo tracks), the book, a making-of DVD, and a set of website exclusives.

Year of the Black Rainbow is the long rumored prelude album to the Amory War Saga, which will tell the origin of the IRO-Bots, Coheed, Cambria, and their brother Jesse, as well as set the stage for the political turmoil held within the Second Stage Turbine Blade that led to the duo’s demise. There are three songs from the new album streaming on Myspace, and if you like it, be sure to look for it in stores next week. For my thoughts on this, click behind the jump.

I used to be a really big fan of Coheed when I was younger, and I really enjoyed the concept. I thought it was a really big selling point, and it was certainly something no one else was doing at the time. It made them a unique entity, and the music wasn’t bad either. As I grew older, I certainly became less enthralled with the band, and with their last album I officially lost all interest. The songs on their Myspace page don’t really intrigue me either, and I think the album title is pretty dumb.

What DOES intrigue me, though, is that Peter David co-wrote the book. How the heck did that come about? Claudio is no stranger to the comic book industry, but Peter David? Man. I’m impressed. I don’t think I’ll end up reading the book because I don’t want to pay $40 for a package I don’t care for. Especially when I bought Peter and Max the day that came out, and I still haven’t gotten around to reading it.

And yes, this is technically “old news,” but with the cover of the book revealed I figured it was about time we cover it.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
