It’s almost September, and you know what that means: everyone in the comics industry is already spending most if not all of their time focusing on October and the impending insanity of New York Comic Con. Recently evolved from a weekend comic event to a full blown media convention that will last throughout the entire week, New York’s battle to be the biggest convention in the world is ramping up quite a bit this year.
Of course, just because the overall event is going to be that much more intense doesn’t mean that there aren’t quite a few things that are worth checking out. While I have it on good authority that there may be some panels and parties that you’ll want to attend (which we can talk about later), our good friends at Ladykiller already have one of their events squared away in the form of a rock show from the band Run by the Gun.
You may remember Ladykiller as the people behind the Thrilling Adventure Hour/Welcome to Night Vale crossover performances from Emerald City Comic Con and San Diego Comic Con, as well as a charity art benefit in Seattle, and at New York Comic Con they’re putting on something a little different. Run by the Gun is a rock band from New York that straddles the lines between reality and fantasy via a transmedia project, in that they’re actually a band that you can go see, but they’re also the stars of comic books they’ve been self-publishing about a band in New York (which you can read right here). And at New York Super Week, you can catch Run By the Gun performing in the West Village on Preview Night of the con, Thursday, October 9th.
Here’s a few pages from their comic:

Ladykiller is known for putting on good shows, and given the actual quality of the comic I can’t imagine this will be any different. You can check out the actual music of Run By the Gun right here. For the full press release from Ladykiller, please see below.
Ladykiller Press Release
It’s a New York Comic Con first: a band that merges rock and roll with a comic book series. Join Run By the Gun as they play songs off their debut album, ‘Songs From the Little Blue House,’ at Rockbar in the West Village on Thursday, October 9. Doors 9PM.
Run By the Gun is an American virtual band created by Rey Miranda and Zambia Greene. The RBG’s fictional life, based in New York City’s East Village and Lower Eastside neighborhoods, is explored and chronicled in the comic book series of the same name.
Afropunk.com says fans of comic books and music are “in for a treat” with Run By the Gun’s integration of visual graphics and intense musical energy. When RBG comics debuted on ComiXology, BleedingCool.com named it their new release Top Pick. Their musical style is straightforward, guitar heavy rock and roll that draws its primary influence from elements of British punk, 90’s grunge, alternative and 70’s arena rock, and power-pop in the vein of bands like Cheap Trick and Big Star.
Their comic universe focuses on the effects their art has on all the character’s lives, loves, friendships and the adventures they experience as they build their band.
Ladykiller invites you to experience the transmedia crossover live at Rockbar in the West Village on Thursday, October 9. Doors at 9PM. Tickets are available for purchase from Eventbrite at http://bit.ly/1va3LB6 beginning 8/27. Watch www.runbythegun.com and www.facebook.com/runbythegun for more details in the weeks to come.
About the Beginnings of Run By the Gun:
Run By the Gun (RBG) is a transmedia project created by two high school friends, Zambia Greene and Rey Miranda. Zambia is a veteran of the NYC music scene having been signed to Sony Publishing in 1988 as a songwriter. Rey works as a director of photography in the film and television industry.
Needing a name for a band he was forming, Zamia tapped Rey, who without hesitation offered, “Run By The Gun.” “Why do you just have that name living at the edge of your fingertips like that?” Zam asked. “That’s life” replied Rey. “We’re living under the gun out here…”
Continued belowThe RBG music and narrative loosely chronicles their youth in a city that offers endless possibility to some – and crushing defeats to most. And they felt the best way to honor, glorify, spoof and pay tribute to the city and scenes that had shaped Zam, Rey and their friends was through the most classicly satirical vehicles: comic books and punk rock music.
