Today on Marvel.com, everyone’s favorite Agent M put up a very interesting blog post, inspired by the following:

A fan on Twitter asked me why comics were called comic books since they’re generally not funny. Sure, it was probably a question loaded with snark, but it’s a valid query.

So I tapped into the mega brain that is Fred Van Lente–kickass Marvel Comics writer and a bit of a comic book historian (check out his and Ryan Dunlavey’s Comic Book Comics)–to get some insight. And Fred delivered. Here’s some of what he laid out this morning on Twitter.

The image, edited by Agent M shown here for you, gives out Fred Van Lente’s full explanation on the term. It’s an interesting read, so click to embiggen that bad boy and put some knowledge in your brain. This is coming from the guy who writes Comic Book Comics, so I’d say you can trust his rundown. This also serves as a reminder to follow both Agent M and Fred Van Lente on twitter, because really, there’s no reason not to!

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
