Today, legendary creator and editor Dick Giordano passed away at the age of 77.

Giordano, for those that do not know, was as esteemed in the industry as anyone for his inking work he did with Neal Adams, on Crisis for Infinite Earths, and John Byrne’s late 80’s relaunch of the Superman titles. He also acted as the Editor-in-Chief of Charlton Comics during their prime, as well as the Vice President and Executive Editor of DC Comics from 1983 to 1993. During this time he also managed to help relaunch most of DC’s characters as well as launch Vertigo Comics with Jenette Kahn and Paul Levitz, beginning a movement of bringing esteemed British writers like Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman to mainstream comics.

He’s an extremely underrated individual in terms of worth to the industry, even serving on the board for the organization that would eventually become The Hero Iniaitive. From what I understand, the value he offered

Frequent collaborator and business partner Bob Layton sent a message out to the comic community about his passing:

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

It is my sorrowful duty to announce that legendary artist/editor/entrepreneur Dick Giordano passed away today.

Few could ever hope to match what he accomplished in his chosen profession, or to excel while maintaining great humor, compassion for his peers and an unwavering love for the art form.

His unique vision changed the comic industry forever and all of those who work in the business continue to share in the benefits of his sizable contributions.

I have been honored to call him a business partner, mentor and dear friend throughout the majority of my lifetime.

We will not see his like again.

Regretfully,
Bob Layton

Thank you and good afternoon, Dick Giordano.
