The comiXology Originals line is growing by two come later this year when a new wave launches. Amazon’s digital comics platform announced two new books for winter 2019 at a press conference at San Diego Comic-Con: the young adult graphic novel “Adora and the Distance,” and the five-issue creator-owned title “Afterlift.”

“Adora and the Distance” heralds from writer Marc Bernardin (Castle Rock), artist Ariela Kristantina (“InSeXts”), colorist Jessica Kholinne, letterer Bernardo Brice, and editor Will Dennis. The new OGN explores the adventures of “Adora, a brave young woman of color who lives in a fantastical world with underground pirates, ghosts, and a mysterious force called ‘The Distance’ which threatens to destroy it all.” Bernardin’s inspiration for this story came from his daughter, who is on the autistic spectrum. Bernadin went on to state in the press release, “This isn’t a book about how hard it is to be a parent or a sibling, it’s one that imagines the unknowable: What’s going on inside the mind of a loved one who has never been able to tell us?”

“Afterlift,” on the other hand, proves that Uber rides where the driver talks to you are not the only hell you need to worry about. Writer Chip Zdarsky (“Sex Criminals”), artist Jason Loo (“Pitiful Human-Lizard”), colorist Paris Alleyne, letterer Aditya Bidikar, and editor Allison O’Toole’s new series follows a woman named Janice Chen who, after quitting her job and turning to work for a ridesharing app, “finds herself thrust into a wild adventure when a mysterious passenger recruits her to take them to the ultimate final destination: Hell itself.” Zdarsky joked about his new book, “This is our brave, unrelenting portrait of a modern Hell. People will read it and ask themselves: ‘Did they relent?’ No, they did not. ‘Were they brave?’ Yeah, probably.”
Both works are set to come out later this year: “Adora” is currently listed for November 1, while “Afterlift” will debut on the same day.
