Following the recent release of comiXology’s romantic comedy “Virtually Yours,” the publisher’s new graphic novel “Crema” will continue to explore complicated relationships, but not the one’s we’re used to.

The story follows Esme, a Brooklyn barista that can interact with ghosts when she drinks too much coffee. Her burgeoning relationship with Yara, heiress of coffee bean provider Cherry Mountain Farm, is impacted when she meets the strange ghost of an old-world nobleman, who begs Esme to deliver a letter from NYC to a haunted coffee farm in Brazil, which will reunite him with his lost love from a century ago. The graphic novel is told in three chapters titled, ‘The Last Roast,’ ‘The Grind,’ and ‘Brew.’

“Crema” releases next week, and is written by Johnnie Christmas, who is known for illustrating Margaret Atwood’s debut graphic novel, “Angel Catbird,” and for adapting William Gibson’s unproduced Alien 3 screenplay at Dark Horse. “Crema” is illustrated by Dante Luiz with letters by Ryan Ferrier, edited by Atla Frafney, and features cover artwork by Christmas.

“I wrote most of it in coffee shops around Vancouver, pounding copious amounts of caffeine and listening to hours of cafe talk,” Christmas said about the project. “Dante’s art is beautiful. We were going for magical realism and fabulism in the modern context, utilizing color shifts in places to further heighten romance and ghostly terror.”

“Crema” will be available to purchase on Kindle and comiXology, and will be available at no extra cost to subscribers of comiXology Unlimited, Kindle Unlimited, and Prime Reading. The graphic novel releases July 21, 2020.
