Daredevil: Reborn Announced. SURPRISE!

Today at the Fan Expo, Marvel announced the news that following Shadowland would be Daredevil: Reborn, written by Andy Diggle with art by Davide Gianfelice and covers by Jock. The book will follow Shadowland and the end of Daredevil, which is ending once Shadowland reaches it’s climax with The End Of Daredevil. The mini series will last four issues long, and will be preluded by Shadowland’s epilogue, After The Fall. The idea behind the book will be that whoever is Daredevil after Shadowland will have to build the character back up from the ground after the events of Shadowland, which means that this isn’t going to be the same kind of “time travel/bring the dead character back to life” kind of deal. It’ll be much more spiritual in nature, such as with Born Again.

And that’s all we have for now.

My initial Twitter response to this news was “Geez, Marvel, what is with the inability to keep it in your pants? Shadowland isn’t even over yet.” I’ve written about how I disliked premature solicitation multiple times now. I don’t really understand a company’s (not just Marvel, anyone) obsession with announcing as quickly as possible what’s coming next. Shadowland isn’t over, but they announced afterwards that Daredevil would end, which made us assume that Daredevil would either die or retire. Now we know that no matter what happens, he’s being “reborn.” In what capacity I guess we don’t know. Maybe there really will be someone else in the DD suit. But honestly? I would’ve preferred to wait until the end of Shadowland to see what happens, because the emotional impact is being completely lost on me.

Hell, I would’ve been happy with Murdock spending some time six feet under. Take a chance, Marvel! Kill one of your top characters and leave him dead!

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
