Don’t put away the billy clubs just yet, New York City’s best avocado firm is back for round two.

After the runaway success of Daredevil (which we live-tweeted in full here), Marvel announced last night that the Netflix series will return for a second season.

To be honest, this is hardly surprising. Daredevil picked up a lot of buzz from fans and critics alike and left open a ton of ideas still to be explored. In fact, most people just assumed some of those mysteries would get resumed with the other Netflix series poised to come out (AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist) but this is the first time Marvel or Netflix have expressed interest to have their shows last more than one season. The aforementioned shows will still be happening, as will the Defenders mini-series which will see all four heroes band together to save the streets of Manhattan.

Though there’s no word on who in the cast from the first season will come back, it’s safe to say we won’t see executive producers Drew Goddard and Steven S. DeKnight. The two were the show runners for Daredevil‘s first season and DeKnight will be leaving due to prior engagements. Goddard did not give word as to why he was leaving in Marvel’s press release. Frankly, this seems like a sign that the Daredevil re-order was a sudden move sprung from its popularity, a deviation from the initial “four shows and then Defenders” Marvel seemed to have lined up.

Replacing Goddard and DeKnight will be Doug Petrie from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and American Horror Story as well as Marco Ramirez from Sons of Anarchy. Both men already worked on the first season and will be taking the creative reins from the departing Goddard and DeKnight.

So now that Daredevil will enter a second season, that means a lot of the easter eggs from the first season might get explored sooner rather than later. Madame Gao (COUGHCRANEMOTHERCOUGH) and her heroin (which blatantly had the Steel Serpent logo on the packaging) will probably factor into Iron Fist and I got the distinct impression that Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple was being set up for some role in the Jessica Jones or Luke Cage series.

Still, Daredevil left a lot of toys laying around in the sandbox. The Cornelius Van Lunt easter egg will probably factor into Defenders. And the war that Stick and Stone mentioned, probably regarding the Hand seemed like it was meant for the eventual crossover but could now make for a compelling second season. Especially if Daredevil’s greek girlfriend from college finds her way back to Hell’s Kitchen. Plus: we can address my biggest complaint about the series and finally introduce Bullseye into the MCU. No, he wasn’t the sniper with the card: Bullseye never misses. And he wouldn’t fire that rifle, he would throw it at someone. And then murder three major female characters on his way back to his house. I didn’t say he was a perfect character.

All in all, it will be interest to see how Marvel and Netflix’s collaborations evolve after this decision, especially if any of the other three shows reach the same success as Daredevil.
