This morning, DC announced two new one-shots, “Dark Days: The Forge” and “Dark Days: The Casting,” which will set the stage for DC’s next big summer blockbuster. Spearheading these issues will be Bat-event veterans Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV as well as artists Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, and John Romita Jr.

Teased back in “Detective Comics” #950, this “Dark Days” event will be spinning out of Tynion’s work on “Detective” where Batman has, as pointed out by the presumed deceased Tim Drake, been building his own army.

In DC’s announcement Synder stated, “Art like this demands an epic story,” before going on to add:

“Dark Days” posits a mystery that traces all the way back to when I started on Batman. I’ve hinted at them over the years with Easter eggs and clues. This is a mystery that literally begins at the dawn of man and spans generations of heroes and villains and ultimately leads to huge revelations about the past, present and future of the cosmology of DC. I couldn’t be more excited for “Dark Days.” It’s the prelude to the event we’ve been developing for years.

Tynion also added to Snyder’s statement,

We’re taking all the ethos and excitement of the work Scott and I have been doing in the Batman titles and unleashing it across the entire DC Universe. The size and scope of what we’re looking to do with ‘Dark Days ‘could only be accomplished by the best of the best. Andy, Jim and John are legends. All of us on this project are pushing one another, and every concept, to the extreme.

Synder and Tynion are currently writing “All-Star Batman” and “Detective Comics,” respectively, and have collaborated in the past on “Batman Eternal,” “Batman and Robin Eternal,” and various other Bat-books. Tyion is a protege of Snyder’s, and has worked closely with him since breaking into the industry.

DC has put three of its most famous artists on the books, all of whom have relevant Bat-experience: Andy Kubert (co-creator of Damian Wayne, currently illustrating “Dark Knight III: The Master Race”), Jim Lee (“Batman: Hush,” and DC co-publisher), and John Romita, Jr (“All-Star Batman”).

Lee was on hand to comment,

It was tremendous fun having peers like Andy Kubert and JRJR in with some of our top writers. Strategically, Dan [DiDio] and I have talked for a long time about bringing the artist back to the table in the genesis of big, epic events. The creative summit was just that, and the level of collaboration was truly invigorating and electrifying. We can’t wait to share ‘Dark Days’ with the DC faithful … they’re in for a thrill ride!

While not explicitly stated, this prelude will most likely lead into Snyder and Greg Capullo’s reunion in Gotham on the event rumored to be called “Metal.” That event has been rumored to be a huge blockbuster crossover spinning out of everything DC is currently doing and setting up numerous threads for every title to follow in the same vein as “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” This would mark a departure from the smaller crossovers that peppered The New 52 and have so far been Rebirth’s go to.

Update: Snyder confirmed via Twitter that this will lead to his reunion with Capullo.

“Dark Days: The Forge” and “Dark Days: The Casting” hit shelves June 14 and July 12 respectively.
