Via Screen Rant, Dark Horse Comics have announced a new six-part miniseries called “Avatar: Adapt or Die” by writer Corinna Bechko, artist Beni R. Lobel, colorist Wes Dzioba, and letterer Michael Heisler.

The miniseries will take place prior to the events of James Cameron’s Avatar, and focus on Sigourney Weaver’s character Dr. Grace Augustine. “Adapt or Die” will follow Grace after making herself an ally of the Omatikaya clan, as she tries to negotiate with them to open a school for Na’vi children. Despite Grace’s good intentions, the synopsis threatens that her plans “could trigger an unprecedented disaster — one afflicting the most vulnerable and protected of Na’vi.”

This will be the third Avatar miniseries that Dark Horse Comics will have published, and the first to be set before the events of the film. The previous two miniseries, “Avatar: Tsu’tey’s Path” and “Avatar: The Next Shadow,” respectively expanded the world in the timeline of the film, and then after its conclusion.

Avatar debuted in 2009 and starred Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana alongside Weaver, and quickly became a box office phenomenon; it remains the highest grossing film of all time. Multiple sequels to the film are planned, with the first set for release this December. Three further sequels are set for the Decembers of 2024, 2026, and 2028.

“Avatar: Adapt or Die” #1 is scheduled for release on May 4.
