Dark Horse Comics have announced they will be publishing a new four-part miniseries called “Crimson Flower” by writer Matt Kindt, artist Matt Lesniewski, and colorist Bill Crabtree. Each issue in the series will feature a guest artist or collaboration, with Malachi Ward, Patric Reynolds & Lee Loughridge, Marguerite Sauvage, and Tyler Bence & Bill Crabtree all announced so far for the series.
The comic will be about a woman who finds comfort in Slavic folk tales after the loss of her family, and is inspired to seek vengeance against the man responsible for their deaths. As she journeys for revenge, the woman uncovers a government plot weaponizing folks tales to create assassin children.
Kindt said that while we have seen “cold blooded Russian assassins” before, “assassins trained using Slavic folktales as a brainwashing device” is “something new that really needed a unique visual style.” Kindt first saw artist Lesniewski work on his Eisner-nominated “The Freak,” and then felt that he would produce “something like we’ve never seen before” for “Crimson Flower,” elaborating that “our collaboration was alchemy – turning this book into a brutal, heartbreaking, psychedelic journey of a woman intent on revenge-killing every assassin that ruined her life.”
We spoke to Kindt when the series was originally released via Patreon earlier this year.
“Crimson Flower” #1 will be released on January 20, 2021.
