It had been rumored for quite some time now, but it looks like all the rumors you heard are true: Darren Aronofsky is, in fact, handling the second Wolverine movie according to Hugh Jackman.
As reported at MTV Splash Page, Wolverine 2 will supposedly be rather different. As Jackman said, “This is ‘Wolverine.’ This is not ‘Popeye.’ He’s kind of dark. This is a change of pace. Chris McQuarrie, who wrote ‘The Usual Suspects,’ has written the script, so that’ll give you a good clue. [Aronofsky’s] going to make it fantastic. There’s going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure.”
I suppose this is appropriate. We know that the second movie will deal with Wolverine’s time in Japan, “drinking to remember.” Aronofsky’s approach to his previous movies seems appropriate enough, because I definitely remember how Wolverine got a mathematical equation stuck in his brain while resorting to doing ass to ass for smack before becoming a washed out wrestler with a bad ticker in need of redemption. See what I did there?
Seriously though. This could be interesting. Fox did take a chance with the previous film by putting Gavin Hood on the directing duties, but fan reaction wasn’t so positive. Perhaps with the current trend of putting high class directors into the chair for superhero films, Aronofsky might be the turn around the X-Men film franchise needs.
