Dav Pilkey (“Captain Underpants,” “Dog Man”) is starting a new graphic novel series with Scholastic Graphix this December in the form of “Cat Kid Comic Club.” The series spins off from his “Dog Man” books.
“I wanted to create a new storyline for Li’l Petey, a character in the ‘Dog Man’ series who is based on my mom and who embodies love, optimism, and hope,” Pilkey said. “In ‘Cat Kid Comic Club,’ Li’l Petey keeps his promise to his best friend Molly that they will teach everyone how to make comics. Together with their new friends, Li’l Petey and Molly make mistakes but with practice and persistence, they learn and become better artists. My hope is that kids everywhere are inspired to write their own stories, appreciate different ways of thinking and approaching art, and feel empowered to be creative.”
The novel will contain elements of comics, photography, painting, claymation, and film animation all to tell one story of friendship and creativity. It follows protagonist and “Dog Man” fan-favorite Li’l Petey as he, along with Flippy the Fish and Molly the Tadpole, teach a class of frogs how to make comics.
Pilkey currently has more than 46 titles under his belt, including the runaway success “Captain Underpants” and its wholly graphic novel spin-off “Super Diaper Baby.” He was named Publishers Weekly‘s “Person of the Year” in 2019, and was awarded the 1997 Caldecott Honor.
“Cat Kid Comic Club” releases on December 1, 2020 in bookstores and digitally.
