Writer David F. Walker is returning to his self-publishing roots this Spring with the launch of his independent comics company, Solid Comix. The first book from the new company, “One Fall,” will be a five-issue wrestling miniseries with artist Brett Weldele (“The Beauty,” “Ultimate Spider-Man”). It will be followed later with a second book titled “The Hatred” with artist Sean Damien Hill (whose work can be seen on Instagram at @seandamienhill).

Walker says he has no intention of leaving his higher profile mainstream comics work though, stating:

“I’m still working with other publishers, and have several major projects coming out over the next several years. But there are also projects that I want to do, which for a variety of reasons simply make more sense to publish myself.”

Walker has written a good number of books for the major comics publishers recently. He hit the mainstream with “Shaft: A Complicated Man” from Dynamite Entertainment, followed by “Cyborg” at DC before going to Marvel to write “Power Man and Iron Fist,” “Luke Cage,” and “Occupy Avengers,” as well as his various “Planet of the Apes” projects at BOOM! Studios. His current titles include the new series “Naomi” from the DC Wonder Comics imprint, “Bitter Root” from Image Comics, and “Superb” with Lion Forge. He’s also scheduled to teach comics writing at Portland State University in 2020. He credits all his current comics success to his history as a self publisher though:

“For those of you that don’t know, my writing career began in 1996 with the self-published ‘zine ‘BadAzz MoFo. Not only did ‘BadAzz MoFo’ contain my first published comic book stories; it was also my introduction to the comic industry. Every great professional opportunity I’ve had sprang from the work I did as a self-publisher. And that’s why I’m getting back to my self-publishing roots with Solid Comix.”

So far a Facebook page has been set up for Solid Comix, which you can visit here.
