We’ve been waiting some time for this announcement, and now we finally have it: for those who have been curious what came along with David Finch’s exclusive contract to DC (aside from covers), DC announced this morning that Finch would be writing and arting a brand new Batman ongoing – Batman: The Dark Knight.

Starting with The Return coming in October, Finch will draw a one-shot written by Grant Morrison before launching into his own series in November. According to Finch, the book will largely be focused on mythology and the dark arts.

The Dark Knight takes Batman outside what he knows, into a world of demonology, dark arts, and mystery. He’s the ultimate detective, faster, stronger and smarter than any villian, but now he faces creatures to whom logic and mortality don’t apply. I want Dark Knight to be true to Batman’s street level, crime fighter roots. He’ll face a rogues gallery that we’re all familiar with, but this book will take him on a darker path where he’ll be stretched to his physical and psychological limits.

The Return of Bruce Wayne as Batman is definitely bringing with it quite a status quo shift, so it’ll be interesting to see what stays and what goes when all is said and done. Having David Finch on a full interior deal is pretty sweet though, and something we’ve definitely been mising over at DC. It’ll be very interesting to see how his writing turns out though, because as we’ve seen not all artists can write tha well to back it up. Let’s hope this turns out well, then!

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
