Right before SDCC, former Deadline reporter Nikki Finke made a report of 7 films that were to be announced at the convention for DC’s film slate — but no announcements came. Shortly after, nine release dates were announced, though no films to go with them.
But today, at a shareholder meeting helmed by Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara and covered quite detailed by Deadline, we now know DC’s full slate through 2020 because investor meetings are the new comic conventions.
Everything kicks off next year with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is the birthplace of the cinematic DCU. 2016 will also feature the Suicide Squad film as well. 2017 will see the first ever Wonder Woman film as well as a Justice League film proper, referred to as “Part 1”. 2018 will have a Flash film (that is not associated with the show) and an Aquaman film. 2019 will see Dwayne Johnson’s Shazam film finally happen, as well as the second part of the Justice League film. Finally, 2020 will give us Cyborg and a rebooted Green Lantern.
There are some additional details given in the article as well. Suicide Squad is mentioned as in-talks with “four A-list” stars and will be directed by David Ayer, and Justice League will be directed by Zach Snyder. We can presume that Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill will reprise their roles in the Justice League films (though there are solo films for them in the works which Warner Bros confirms could be in addition to these announced films), and Gal Gadot, Ray Fisher and Jason Momoa will all be reprising their roles for Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Aquaman, respectively.
Additionally, according to Ben Fritz of the Wall Street Journal‘s live tweet of the meeting, Ezra Miller will be playing the Flash.
Interestingly as well, the Justice League film is referred to as Parts 1 and 2, which seems to imply some form of split. Given their displacement two years apart, as well as the fact that DC is not building a cinematic universe slowly like Marvel did, it’ll be interesting to see how all the pieces fit together, let alone why the Justice League film is done in two parts.
There is also no word of how the Suicide Squad film ties in with the overall Justice League net cast here or if it will be standalone, but one would assume there’s a form of connection in there somewhere. No words on what characters will be used either, but I would guess it would be New 52 related in some way.
So, based on the previous timeline given by DC for their films, this is what the slate assumedly looks like in terms of release dates:
- Aug. 5, 2016: Suicide Squad
- June 23, 2017: Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot
- Nov. 17, 2017: Justice League Part 1
- March 23, 2018: The Flash, starring Ezra Miller
- July 27, 2018: Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa
- April 5, 2019: Shazam, starring Dwayne Johnson
- June 14, 2019: Justice League Part 2
- April 3, 2020: Cyborg, starring Ray Fisher
- June 19, 2020: Green Lantern
We’ll be updating with more information as its announced. In the meantime, let us know what you think in the comments below.
