Day two of San Diego Comic Con brought us a ton of DC Comics news, not the least of which being Young Animal’s move to Vertigo and collision with the DC Universe, as well as all that was announced at the Dark Matter panel. With so much to cover, here’s a rundown of everything else DC-related:
– November will hold a Justice League Day similar to the Batman Day and Wonder Woman Day held in recent years. The previous events invited comic shops to celebrate by giving away a free comic exclusive to the day, along with promoting the current titles with those characters. Expect Justice League Day to be the same.
– The critically reviled Suicide Squad will be getting a spin-off featuring Harley Quinn and the Joker. Early details claim that the film will take an antagonistic view of their relationship. Many fans thought Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn was the best part of the original movie, so given that and Harley’s surge of popularity over the last few years, this film’s announcement hardly comes as a surprise.
– Unnamed sources say that Ben Affleck’s Batman will be ushered out of the DC film universe sooner rather than later. The actor made his debut in the role with last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, had a small role in Suicide Squad, and will play a major role in November’s Justice League. No word on yet on whether this will affect the status of the solo Batman movie set to feature Affleck.
– Over on the CW, season three of Supergirl will not include any major roles for General Zod or Lex Luthor. Up until this point, the show has chosen to shy away from major villains that have appeared in recent movies, so the third season looks to continue that tradition of exploring the many other characters in the DC universe.
– More details have dropped about the long-awaited third season of Young Justice. According to stills, the series, titled Young Justice: Outsiders, will feature four of the characters from the first season along with the second generation heroes from season two. There will also be new heroes and those only hinted at in the existing episodes, including Arrowette, Spoiler, and Thirteen (likely a version of Traci 13). The third season will contain 26 episodes and will debut on a new DC streaming platform in 2018.
– As Dan DiDio mentioned at the Dark Matter panel, all upcoming books launching out of the event will launch at $2.99 with no variant covers. No word yet on whether they will stay at that price point after launching.
– Also briefly mentioned at that panel, Jeff Lemire hinted that he might be on an upcoming Hawkman ongoing. Hawkman has been off the table for a few years but appears to have a major role in the upcoming “Dark Nights: Metal” storyline. With Lemire writing a Hawkman one-shot tying into “Dark Nights: Metal,” it looks like that will be just the beginning of his work the the character.
– Geoff Johns said that, at least as of right now, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will not be playing Black Adam in Shazam. Hopefully, this means that he’s playing Captain Marvel himself, but we shall see.
– Michael Green – producer/showrunner for Starz’s American Gods – has written a pilot script for the long awaited television adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan/Pia Guerra Vertigo series, “Y: The Last Man.” The show has been rumored for some time now, so it is nice to see some actual movement towards production.
