Boy, you know who I love? I love Darwyn Cooke. I love him enough that I wrote a lot about him for this year’s Artist August. His artwork can be so emblematic of a time gone past for comics, bringing a sense of that simpler shining Silver Age back to the page.
That’s why I am so excited to bring you the news that DC announced over at CBR that December will be a variant cover month dedicated to Darwyn Cooke. Now, if the aim of variant covers is to get me to buy copies of comics I normally wouldn’t, DC officially has me beat. I will break my bank account if it means getting some of these covers. I mean, the “Supergirl” #37 cover even has Comet the Superhorse. You guys. Comet the Superhorse.
This might be the best idea DC has ever had. It’s also a little hilarious that this is coinciding with out very own Variant Week as this might be the new best example of how to do variant covers. The top image is Darwyn Cooke’s variant cover for “Action Comics” #37 and the images below are Cooke’s variant covers for “Supergirl” #37, “Justice League United” #7 and “Grayson” #5, respectively. There’s also a full list below them of the issues that will feature variant covers for us to hunt down over the course of December.
