DC In September – What Is Real, and What Isn’t? (UPDATED)

So DC announced yesterday that they were relaunching their entire line. 52 titles all with #1s attached, all with varying creative teams both familiar and brand new. Of course, what everyone wants now is information. Fans are causing a literal uproar on Twitter trying to figure out what is true and what isn’t.

So the goal of this post is to coalesce some of the information, and provide the “source”, if possible.

For starters, we can tell you a few things. The Justice League are no longer “of America,” Martian Manhunter is out of the League but Cyborg is in (presumably because of his role in Flashpoint), and we’re unsure if that’s Dick or Bruce as Batman, or Wally or Barry as Flash. Given costume changes, it could be anyone. However, Superman’s change is rather noticeable. The book will be written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Jim Lee, and it has been rumored for about two years now according to Bleeding Cool. We also know that there will upwards of 14 members and a “new purpose” for forming (thanks to USA Today)

Moving on. The following set of information was supplied by an anonymous source to ComicBookResources:

  • Grant Morrison will be writing a Superman book.
  • Brids of Prey will relaunch without Gail Simone.
  • Teen Titans will relaunch with Fabian Nicieza (Update: Apparently not true? Maybe?)
  • Justice Society of America will relaunch without Marc Guggenheim.
  • Green Lantern will relaunch with Geoff Johns at the helm, and everything that happened because of Blackest Night remaining in continuity
  • All that stuff JMS did with Wonder Woman will be a forgotten yesterday, except the revamped costume. Kind of.
  • Aquaman will launch with Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis.
  • Hawkman will launch with James Robinson and Philip Tan. Maybe.
  • Action Comics and Detective Comics may or may not be renumbered. No one is talking.

The following set of information is taken from comic book rumor mongers (and generally right 90% of the time) Bleeding Cool:

  • Something called “Edge.”
  • Something called “Dark.”
  • Deadman will star in the rebooted Adventure Comics, maybe with Ryan Sook involved.
  • Superman is getting a new uniform completely. And George Perez has something to do with it all.
  • Rags Morales may be involved with Action Comics #1.
  • The entire Lantern spectrum is getting some kind of title.
  • Brian Clevinger was GOING to have a Firestorm title… but now apparently that’s kaput for unknown reasons. At least, not with Clevinger (unfortunately).
  • Legion Lost is being relaunched.
  • OMAC #1 by Scott Kolins. Maybe. UPDATE: Or maybe Dan Didio and Kieth Giffen? Or all of the above?
  • Superman and Wonder Woman are going to get together. Flashpoint might screw up Superman’s marriage, apparently.
  • Batgirl #1, starring Barbara Gordon
  • Nightwing #1, starring Dick Grayson
  • Detective Comics #1, still with Jock (and hopefully Snyder)
  • Batman #1, with Greg Capullo
  • Grifter #1, and maybe more Wildstorm relaunches within the DCU
  • My Greatest Adventure #1 (which is apparently a definite, for those reading Weird Worlds)
  • Apparently there is an editorial edict stating all female characters need to wear more practical clothing. Take that as you will?

How much of this you want to give credence to is up to you. For now, take everything with various grains of salt. However, if Morrison is indeed responsible for Superman work, sign me up. No questions asked at all.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
