DC Comics have announced a new 14-part digital-first series, “Injustice: Year Zero,” by writer Tom Taylor, artists Rogê Antônio (“X-Men Red”) and Cian Tormey (“Batgirl”), colorist Rain Beredo (“DCeased: Dead Planet”), and letterer Wes Abbott, with cover art by Julian Totino Tedesco. The series will return to the world of the Injustice video game franchise, and tell the story of the events that led up until the franchise’s first video game and comic book, both called Injustice: Gods Among Us.

The first arc of the series, ‘Fall of the Old Gods,’ will follow the Justice League as they uncover how the Justice Society of America covertly fought during WWII to bring down a tyrant, while the Joker uses his leverage to control both the Justice League and Justice Society, to take down both groups from the inside. In an interview with THR, Taylor stated that the direction for this prequel series was to answer, “Why did Joker target Superman? And where did the Justice Society go?,” as well as to provide a series that gives readers an “escape from the real world,” saying that this series will have more “hope. Genuine heroics. This one isn’t as morally grey as what comes after.”

Taylor has previously written two comic book series in the Injustice franchise, namely the first prequel series, “Injustice: Gods Among Us,” and “Injustice 2,” which told the story of the events between the two video games in the series. The last Injustice comic book to be released was Tim Seeley and Freddie E Williams II’s crossover series, “Injustice VS. Masters of the Universe,” which concluded in January 2019.

The first three issues of “Injustice: Year Zero” are available now, with the series continuing to be released twice per month. Issue #4 is scheduled for release on August 18. Print copies of the series will be released at an unannounced date. You can read the full interview and see preview pages for the first issue here.
