In assumedly an effort to both glorify the past and make attempts at pushing to the future, it appears that DC are planning to revive “National Comics” as an anthology series for July (as announced at Wired’s GeekDad blog).

Launching as a series of one-and-done books about characters who don’t have books of their own or enough clout to maintain their own titles, similar to “DC Universe Presents,” the books first story will be about Eternity (assumedly of the Kid variety). The issue will be written by Jeff Lemire with illustrations by Cully Hamner, and finds police coroner Christopher Freeman finding he has the ability to resurrect the dead, using those abilities to resurrect victims to help find their murderers and gain closure.

From there the book will feature stories about characters like Madame X, Rose and Thorn, and Looker, assumedly with the general hope that these characters could find homes elsewhere from various creative teams. Whether or not any of these characters are able to hold their own agains a character like Batman is obviously up for debate, but kudos to DC for giving it a shot.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
