DC Comics have revealed three new Webtoon series: “Vixen: NYC,” “Red Hood: Outlaws,” and “Zatanna & The Ripper.” They also announced “Young Justice: Targets,” a new, six-part miniseries by Greg Weisman and Christopher Jones, the showrunner and storyboard artist for Young Justice: Phantoms, respectively.
“Vixen: NYC,” by writer Jasmine Walls and lead artist Manou Azumi, will follow a young Mari Jiwe as she uncovers her heritage on a trip to Ghana after graduating high school. There, she inherits her trademark Tantu Totem, whose animal power-granting capabilities she discovers when she returns to the US, and starts her life in New York. Struggling to balance her new life as an adult and a superhero, Mari’s life will only get more complicated as she is challenged by General Maksai, one of her distant relatives, who wants to use the power of the totem for himself.
“Red Hood: Outlaws,” by writer Patrick R Young and artist Nico Bascuñán, will see Red Hood, Artemis of Bana-Mighdall, and Bizarro team up to establish themselves as their own individuals, distinct from their respective counterparts of Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. The third title, writer Sarah Dealy and lead artist Syro’s “Zatanna & The Ripper,” will see Zatanna become stuck in London in the 1800s, after her father, the magician Giovanni Zatara, teleports her to safety during a battle with Allura. With her magical powers only just manifesting, Zatanna fears she is permanently displaced; that is until she crosses paths with John Constantine, who believes that she can return to the present by solving the mystery of the Jack the Ripper murders.
Until now the DC and Webtoon partnership had only produced one title, “Batman: Wayne Family Adventures,” which launched to millions of views last year. “Vixen: NYC” will debut on Webtoon on May 26, whilst “Red Hood: Outlaws” and “Zatanna & The Ripper” are currently scheduled for unspecified dates in the summer.
“Young Justice: Targets” will follow on from the events of the HBO Max series, and see the team having to rescue Queen Perdita from her kidnappers. Further details about the series were left largely under wraps, with the kidnappers’ identities yet to be revealed, though we do know that they have left “Green Arrow and Black Canary poisoned and comatose.” Weisman stated that the series is “fully canon,” and will feature “plenty of action, nearly our entire cast, and multiple new revelations.”
“Young Justice: Targets” #1 is set to be released on DC Universe Infinite to subscribers on June 14 before being released in comic shops on July 26. You can check out preview pages for the first issue, as well as its variant covers by Meghan Hetrick and Travis Mercer, here.
