If there is one thing rather interesting about the modern world we live in, it’s that things like Twitter exist – which allow instantaneous reactions/commentary to the world we live in. And there is certainly no lack of vocal reactions to the various events within the comic book community – especially from that of the professionals.
So with DC relaunching their line, what are the professionals saying? A lot of the following commentary will be shown in as much context as I can possibly provide, and a lot of them are from non-DC people as the current DC writers/artists/professionals are all sworn to secrecy on what is to come.
Take a look after the cut for some commentary from various industry professionals.
Ron Perazza, former VP of DC Comics Online: I have a hard time accepting that a for-profit business must voluntarily hobble it’s growth & prosperity for the sake of nostalgia. #comics
Scott Snyder, writer of Detective Comics/American Vampire: As to where I’ll be post reboot, I’m not allowed to say, guys, but I will say that I’m very happy about it. So don’t worry 🙂
Brian Michael Bendis, Marvel Architect, writer of the Avengers: I haven’t been this excited since they announced morrison and lee were relaunching wildcats!! 🙂
Jason Aaron, Marvel Architect, writer of Wolverine and Schism: Re: the big DC news, anything that gets people excited about going to comic shops or legally downloading comics is good for all of us…
Ron Marz, writer of Witchblade, Shinku, and Artifacts: Some folks are going flippy-floppy at reports of DC renumbering books at #1. Important thing is what’s inside, not the number on cover. You know which comics “count”? The ones you like. Spend your money on comics you want to support. Comics are about story and art and imagination. Not numbers. If you’re upset about DC re-numbering, I think you’re missing the point.
Tom Brevoort, Editor at Marvel: You know what this means? There’s no point buying any DC Comics until September, since none of them will “count” anymore. #moreroomforMarvel (and, soon afterwards) Just to be clear, for all of the irate DC readers out there, I genuinely think this is the kind of bold and daring thing that DC needs to do
Kurt Busiek, writer of Astro City, Kirby: Genesis: The new DC: I have no inside info whatsoever, but I think I’d bet money that Clark & Lois won’t be married in SUPERMAN #1…
Gail Simone, writer of Secret Six, Birds of Prey: Look, remember when McDonald’s first made the McRib and all those people died? Then the survivors loved it? This is like that.
Ed Brubaker, writer of Captain America, Criminal: Anyone following the rise of digital piracy of comics could see Day and Date coming. Every book is online Tues. night now. #peopleruinthings Seriously, DC’s reboot happens in September. CRIMINAL comes out tomorrow. Focus on the now, people.
Ben McCool, writer of Choker, Memoir: News about DC’s 50-title revamp/same-day digital releases is as cool as it is smart. Nice work, everyone.
Nick Spencer, writer of THUNDER Agents, Morning Glories, Iron Man 2.0: Congrats to dc all around, some exciting news there… But renumbering action & tec is downright heartbreaking.
Tim Seeley, writer of Hack/Slash: if you’re one of those people who gets mad at reboots and re-numberings, may I suggest you switch to some fine creator owned comics?!
Reilly Brown, artist of Incredible Hercules, Amazing Spider-Man: Wouldn’t it be wild if PROGRESSING the story made sales go up and they didn’t even have to reboot it in the end? Needless to say, there really haven’t been that many good reboots in comics.
Brian Wood, writer of DMZ, Northlanders: re: reactions to DC news: creators get annoyed by fans who are snarky & elitist, but those same creators are just as bad. jesus christ, ppl!
Rob Williams, writer of Ghost Rider, Daken: I must be getting old. Not bothered about reboots, new costumes, whether a book’s 900 or #1. Would just like good stories please.
Jeff Parker, writer of Thunderbolts and Hulk: I’m calling it, all the DC super dudes are going to have soul patches
Joe Eisma, artist of Morning Glories and Detective Space Cat: I dunno, @jimlee00, I kind of wish the Justice League were wearing Cosby sweaters instead of V-necks.
Andy Diggle, writer of Dardevil, The Losers: You have *infinite* choice. If the stuff you want isn’t out there, go and make it yourself. Vote with your wallet.
Jimmy Palmiotti, writer of Freedom Force, Power Girl, Jonah Hex: all i hope is someone who hasnt read comics in years downloads one and decides its time to find a comic store
Erik Larsen, writer/artist of Savage Dragon: How is a store supposed to order 51 #1 issues? When Marvel did X-Men #1 back in the ’90s a lot of stores over-ordered and went belly up.
Joe Caramagna, co-creator of Model Operandi: When people talk about comics that “matter” I want to remind them that comics are not real. NONE of it really matters! 🙂 Just have fun!
Brad Meltzer, writer of Identity Crisis, Green Arrow, the last JLA reboot: Can’t wait for this amazing JL # 1
Robert Liefeld, artist of Deadpool Corps, the Infinite: Been buying alot of DC comics the last 12 months, looking forward to buying more. Not everyone will work, but thats part of the derby…
Nate Cosby, former Marvel editor: You can do it, DC. You can put Superman back in his blue footie pajamas & tinier triangle emblem. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!
David Uzumeri, ComicsAlliance writer: Let’s be honest here: 99% of LCSes are glorified UPS depots. All hysteria aside: this is pretty fucking huge. I doubt they’ll fuck with @grantmorrison’s Batman plans. Or @geoffjohns0’s GL. But there are certain franchises that are just completely fucked up. Justice League. Teen Titans. Wonder Woman.
