As I type this, my cat is currently sitting in my lap, which I think is only appropriate.

DC is launching a new title with Capstone Publishing starring the Super-Pets, which feature all of the pets for the World’s Greatest Superheroes – Batman’s dog Ace, Superman’s dog Krypto, Aquaman’s seahorse Storm, and Captain Marvel’s bunny Hoppy for example. They will be fighting against some of the world’s most evil animals, including Dex-Starr (who just wants to be loved), Gorilla Grodd, and the Bad News Birds (to name a few!). The book is aimed at early readers (grades 1-3), and is definitely going to be a fun way to get kids into comics and superheroes. The best part of all is that it is illustrated by Eisner-award winning comic book artist Art Baltazar, the man behind one of the most entertaining all-ages title available, Tiny Titans.

The first of the six books in this 24-book series will be launching soon in January. In order to celebrate, Capstone will be launching a writing contest for kids to go along with the series. As detailed to us straight from the source, “the “My Pet Is Super!” contest invites kids in grades 1-3 to write a newspaper article about their pet for The Daily Planet. The winning “reporter” will have his/her super-pet drawn by award-winning comic illustrator Art Baltazar (illustrator of the SUPER-PETS series) and the super-pet will appear in a future book in the series. The winner and his/her school will also receive books. The top 50 entrants will receive two free books–one for the child and one for his/her school library. For complete rules and to enter, visit www.CapstoneKids.com. The contest runs from January 15, 2011-February 28, 2011.”

People are always trying to find more appropriate things for younger readers in the comic book world, and I can’t think of a better place to start. Look for these books and more from Capstone and DC in your local shop later this month.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
