The synopsis reads, “With ratings falling and competition rising, they gamble it all on the Chernobyl of haunted locations: Edgeway Penitentiary, where the Ghost Bros find conclusive proof of the afterlife… After they die and come back as ghosts themselves, trapped there with the angry ghosts who killed them! Now that they’re deceased, the Ghost Bros have to be the best dead dudes they can be, prove to the world that ghosts exist, and save the lives of their most hated rivals (Oh yeah — and to save the living from a ghostly armageddon. Or whatever).”
On Twitter, Sebela said the book was inspired by the Travel Channel series Ghost Adventures, which “I would make friends of mine watch it too so they could see how dumb it was (mostly against their will), and I’m glad to have finally gotten them out of my system with this book.” The original title was simply “Ghost Bros,” until Sebela found out about Destination America’s Ghost Brothers, and that “Lorne Michaels got a trademark on the name ‘Ghost Bros’ for something he never made,” so “Dead Dudes” it was. He also said it was a dream to work with main artist Ben Sears (“House of the Black Spot,” Midnight Gospel), quipping “no idea why he bothered to work with me when he’s an amazing storyteller on his own, but I don’t look gift dreams in the mouth.”
