Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine (the movie formerly known as Deadpool 3) during the Super Bowl:

The trailer begins with Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool/Wade Wilson celebrating his birthday (while sporting a wig) with all of his surviving friends from his first two movies, including Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Peter (Rob Delaney), and Shatterstar (Lewis Tan), whose deaths were undone when Wade used Cable’s time machine during Deadpool 2‘s end credits. And wouldn’t you know it, the Time Variance Authority from Loki shows up to prune this timeline (and Wade’s wig), while Matthew Macfadyen’s TVA agent offers Wade the chance for a second life in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Cue a lot of action, during which it appears Wade will have to battle both a post-apocalyptic band of marauders, led by Aaron Stanford’s Pyro (in his first appearance since X-Men: The Last Stand), and the TVA. During the frenzy, it appears Alioth, He Who Remains’s purple smoke monster, will enter the fray, snatching up a TVA agent (much to Wade’s horror.) There’s no sign of Emma Corrin’s unidentified villain, other than the bald person (shown from behind at about 1:16 mins) who might be their character.

Following a brief tease of his Patch persona at a casino, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine finally emerges at the end to stab Wade for his insolence, although we only get to see his silhouette (claws included) and the back of his classic yellow-and-blue costume: coupled with the title reveal, it’s clear that this trailer was aimed at the Super Bowl audience who were unaware Jackman was returning to the part, especially after his definitive exit in 2017’s Logan.

Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in theaters on July 26. It will mark the first R-rated MCU film, as well as the only MCU film this year after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. It will arrive a little over 15 years after Reynolds first played Wade opposite Jackman in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a movie that, incidentally, led to the start of this very website, after our founder decided to publish a review defending it.

In the meantime, do also check out the Valentine’s Day-themed teaser poster, featuring a characteristically immature double entendre:
