As a great woman once said… everything that has a beginning has an end, Neo. There was also something about sacrifice and viruses and big robot squid things and I don’t know, I’m getting off topic here.

The point is that Kelly Sue DeConnick confirmed this weekend at HeroesCon that she will be leaving “Captain Marvel” as writer after “Secret Wars” finishes. This is definitely sad news as Kelly Sue’s writing on the title is largely one of the reasons I am writing this right now and it has taken me all over the globe. Okay, it’s taken me to America, but from Scotland that’s pretty damn far.

Kelly Sue DeConnick, along with artists like Dexter Soy, Emma Rios, Felipe Andrade, David Lopez and others as well as editors Stephen Wacker and Sana Amanat and costume designer Jamie McKelvie, re-envisioned Carol Danvers in the Marvel Universe that spoke to a whole new generation of comic book fans. “Captain Marvel” created one of the most powerful fanbases in current comics with enough vocal push to ensure that the character will be making her 2018 feature film debut as Captain Marvel.

Even though “Captain Marvel” will be losing Kelly Sue DeConnick as writer, the character will likely live on in the more than capable hands of her successor (I would put money on it being “Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps” co-writer Kelly Thompson) while DeConnick will likely be focusing on her creator owned writing as part of Milkfed Criminal Masterminds.

It’s terribly sad to see her go, but we are left with some fantastic comics that will live forever.

In other, mores inspiring news, the New York Daily News exclusively announced that Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli will be reteaming for a new Miles Morales ongoing series after “Secret Wars” wraps up.

This isn’t really surprising news as Miles is an incredibly popular character and was shown prominently in Marvel’s ‘All-New, All-Different’ teaser. What is cool, though, is that it confirms that Miles’ new series will take place in whatever the main Marvel Universe is after “Secret Wars” wraps up.

I mean, we already knew this because of Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day issue this year, but cool news is still cool news.

Alice W. Castle

Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears her, Alice W. Castle is a trans femme writing about comics. All things considered, it’s going surprisingly well. Ask her about the unproduced Superman films of 1990 - 2006. She can be found on various corners of the internet, but most frequently on Twitter: @alicewcastle
