The first issue will star Psylocke, portrayed here as “a wandering swordswoman with a psychic blade, [who] arrives at village that’s being targeted by demons.” One demon is described as resembling Venom, being “black and white with a terrifying red tongue,” while another is called possibly “the strongest demon there is,” à la Hulk.
Momoko said, “I love yōkai [“ghost”] stories, horror stories, Japanese folktales, classic samurai tales… [and] I wanted to tackle as much as possible telling these concepts with the Marvel characters and make something Marvel fans can still appreciate [while bringing] in a fresh direction. Also, I had to know how much I can push Marvel’s boundaries in character designing and storytelling.”
This is the first project on interiors for Momoko at Marvel. The artist, who is part of their Stormbreakers program, said the comic’s genesis lay in illustrating Upper Deck’s Marvel Flair Trading Cards in 2018: “I had Scarlet Samurai [Mariko Yashida] in my characters to paint,” she said. “I daydreamed her stories since not only is Scarlet Samurai Japanese, but she is a female character and a samurai and has yakuza background. It was a character I felt I had to create a story for.”
“Demon Days” begins in March, and will follow a trimonthly schedule, where each issue is released every three months.
