Fresh from Marvel’s June solicitations comes this sneak peek at the upcoming “Hawkeye” #21.

ANNIE WU (A)

The Finale, Part 1:
• David. Clint. Barney. The Building. The Tracksuit Draculas. The Clown.
• Ever seen “Rio Bravo?” Check it out, it’s pretty good.

There’s a couple of interesting notes in this solicit, one of which being Annie Wu doing a Clint story in David Aja’s stead (update: Aja’s confirmed on Twitter that he’ll be drawing this issue), but the most intriguing information here is the issue’s title: “The Finale.” Is this the beginning of the end for what could be considered Marvel’s most inventive series ever? It seems so, the Tracksuit Dracula plot that’s been building since the first issue seems to be coming to a boil, and with Katie’s LA story said to be ending in “Hawkeye” #20, it’s probable that Clint’s story in New York will get wrapped up too. That might be for the best when it comes to a series that’s been marred by delays and seems to be at its best when it’s finite. We’d much rather have “Hawkeye” be a flash in a pan, a singular innovative story we can always fondly remember, rather than watch it get dragged out.

There’s a few more mysteries in this solicit aside from the possibility of “Hawkeye” coming to an end. Next to the Bartons’ names, in front of it actually, is a “David.” Now, it’s likely to be someone in the series I’ve forgotten about or a new character. If this David turns out to be the owner of the David Barton gym (a real place I pass by nearly every day that always reminds me of “Hawkguy”) then we will have reached complete Matt Fraction singularity.

Finally, there’s also the suggestion that we should all check out Rio Bravo which means this issue will almost undoubtedly be inspired by a classic film, so we’re going to get Fraction singularity no matter what. Or this could be a viral marketing stunt for the upcoming animated film Rio 2 starring Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, and Bruno Mars.

“Hawkeye” #21 comes out in June and Rio 2 premieres in theaters internationally March 20th and in the US April 11th. If you have any theories on David, the end of Hawkguy, or the connections between Tracy Morgan’s pit bull character “Luiz” and Pizza Dog, feel free to share in the comments.
