SDCC ’19: Marvel Announces “Doctor Doom,” “The Amazing Mary Jane,” “Future Fight Firsts,” Others

Marvel made a few announcements at today’s San Diego Comic Con, beginning with “Doctor Doom,” starring the long-time foe of the Fantastic Four. The ongoing series, created by writer Christopher Cantrell and artist Salvador Larroca, will debut later this year.

Victor Von Doom – scientist, sorcerer, disfigured face, twisted soul – has been spending much of his time warning against a trillion-dollar global effort to create the first “artificial” black hole. Wrestling with visions of an entirely different life…a better future… DOCTOR DOOM finds himself at a crossroads. (what is he questioning?) A catastrophic act of terrorism kills thousands, and the prime suspect is… DOOM? Victor will have to push his unexplained thoughts aside and focus on remaining alive as the title of “Most Wanted Man” is thrust upon him…. Left with no homeland, no armies, no allies, indeed, nothing at all, will the reign of Doctor Doom come to an abrupt halt?

Secondly, Mary Jane Watson is getting a solo title created by writer Leah Williams and artist Carlos Gomez. The aptly named “The Amazing Mary Jane” picks up where “Amazing Spider-Man” #25 left off, exploring a new connection with Mysterio.

The web-head’s favorite redhead (and yours!) is taking a chance on her dreams. But if you’ve read ASM #25, you’ll know Mysterio is behind Mary Jane’s big shot, and someone worse is behind him! What’s real and what’s illusion, what’s illusion and what’s Hollywood phoniness?

Finally, some fan-favorite characters from the mobile game Marvel Future Fight are getting their own specials in a series written by Alyssa Wong with art by Jon Lam, Kevin Libranda, Gang Hyuk Lim, and more. The “Future Fight Firsts” series debuts this October with “Crescent and Io” #1, “White Fox” #1, and “Luna Snow” #1. Full synopsis, as well as cover art for all three, are available to view at Marvel.com.

“The True Believers have spoken, and when they do, the teams at Marvel Games and Marvel Publishing assemble and leap to answer them!” said Bill Rosemann, Marvel Games Vice President and Creative Director. “This time it began with the introduction of the all-new characters K-Pop Super Hero Luna Snow and the delightful duo of Crescent & Io, plus the modern update of secret agent White Fox’s field uniform, in the mobile game Marvel Future Fight. Reacting to player response, all three characters then made their Marvel comic book debut in the sold-out ‘War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas’ mini-series and are now leaping into the team’s upcoming new series! And to give readers additional insight into these colorful characters’ backgrounds and what forces set them upon their individual paths to battle evil, we’re delivering not one, but three ‘Future Fight First’ specials that unveil their previously unrevealed origin stories!”

Marvel also issued two teasers earlier at San Diego Comic-Con. The first was for “Annihilation Is Only the Beginning…,” with reported involvement from “Guardians of the Galaxy” writer Donny Cates. The second teaser was for “2099,” with involvement from writer Nick Spencer, which picks up from the events of this month’s “Amazing Spider-Man” #25. Both are set for a November 2019 release.
