In a fairly amusing little news story appearing on the Associated Press today, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has (again) ‘officially’ announced that he will be appearing in an upcoming Shazam feature film after teasing it last month. Of course, the best part of the announcement is that Johnson apparently hasn’t decided if he’ll be the superhero of the film or the villain, Black Adam. And why is that the best part? Because in the only quote AP presents, Johnson remarks, “I am putting my heart and soul and my bones into this role.”
Well, at least there’s that.
I’m a big fan of the Rock, as it happens. I’ve never been into wrestling, but the Rock is the kind of character who clearly never takes himself too seriously, yet just seriously enough to be convincing enough that you’ll believe he’s some kind of chef that throws people around in a ring. All this comes from Dwayne Johnson, of course, who clearly has a lot of fun with the films he chooses to make; while I may not have been first in line to see Tooth Fairy, you can tell that a guy going from RAW into that is fairly comfortable in different and more versatile rolls.
Of course, this also isn’t the first time that Johnson has said he’s playing a certain DC character, as I’m sure all the disappointed Lobo fans out there will tell you. But Johnson would do well as either Shazam or Black Adam, the latter of which he’d been rumored (or at least fancasted) to play for some time now anyway.
While it may not tie into the upcoming pseudo-Justice League film Dawn of Justice, I imagine we’ll be hearing more about the release date of this film as one of the eight films DC has scheduled for the next few years.
