Via The Hollywood Reporter, Dark Horse Comics has announced a new sci-fi graphic novel for middle-grade readers.
“Earth Boy,” written by Paul Tobin with art by Ron Chan, follows Benson Chow, a farm boy in the year 3115 who dreams of graduating from the Kayrus Galactica Ranger Academy and adventuring across the galaxy — even though no one from Earth has ever been accepted into the school in its one hundred and twenty year history. But when his application is approved, Benson finds that the stresses of transferring schools are the same, no matter where you are in the universe.
“Earth Boy” is not Tobin and Chan’s first collaboration for Dark Horse. The pair have worked together on “Plants vs. Zombies,” based on the popular tower defense game from PopCap. That series has been running since 2013, with volume 17 of the collected editions available on December 22.
In addition to his work on “Plants vs. Zombies,” Chan has provided art for several of Dark Horse’s licensed series, such as “The Guild,” “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic,” and “Husbands.” Tobin is an Eisner-winning writer, winning Best Digital Comic for “Bandette” (with his wife, artist Colleen Coover) in 2013, 2016, and 2017. Though originally published by Monkeybrain Comics, Dark Horse began collecting the series in trade paperback in June of this year.
“Earth Boy” is scheduled for release on March 24, 2021, and currently available for pre-order at select retailers. Previews of the book can be found in The Hollywood Reporter, and on Ron Chan’s website.
