Announced today at Emerald City ComicCon, Image and Top Cow will be releasing “Sunset”, a new original graphic novel by Christos Gage and Jorge Lucas as part of a new OGN initiative from the Top Cow imprint Minotaur Press.

The black-and-white book stars Nick Bellamy, a retired Vegas mob enforcer, whose past comes up against him at his home and was actually born from an old “Darkness” pitch Gage had set in Vegas and starring Jackie Estacado’s father and grandfather. The book is described as a bit of a genre-bender with elements of noir, revenge stories, crime capers and romance, with Gage describing it as “Old Man Noir” (a term coined by Duane Swierczynski), and is influenced by movies like the Unforgiven, Taken and the Limey. It’s a bit different from what Gage is known for these days with books like “Avengers Academy” and “X-Men Legacy”, yet closer to darker stories Gage wrote earlier in his career (such as the oft missed by quite excellent “Absolution”).

It will be released July 18th in addition to a 32-page “first look” comic, which features the first 32 pages and will be sold for a dollar. The preview will also be in color for added value to the reader/purchaser.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
